Dr. Ann Olivarius Discusses Landmark Verdict in Gisèle Pelicot Case (BBC’s The Context with Christian Fraser)

Dr. Ann Olivarius interviewed by Christian Fraser.

The recent sentencing of Dominique Pelicot has marked the conclusion of France’s largest-ever rape trial, a case that has deeply unsettled the nation and garnered global attention.

Pelicot, 72, was convicted of drugging and raping his ex-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, over nearly a decade, during which he facilitated the abuse of her by dozens of strangers. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the maximum term, while 50 other men involved received lesser sentences.

The verdict has ignited conversations about the pervasive gaps in understanding and addressing sexual violence in France.

Dr. Ann Olivarius joined Christian Fraser on BBC’s The Context with Christian Fraser to discuss the implications of this case. While the convictions are a step forward, Dr. Olivarius stressed that much more must be done to ensure women’s safety.
